Minor procedures (Lacrimal Lavage, Foreign body removal)

Lacrimal Lavage

The lacrimal gland, within the eyelid, produces tears. The tears are released onto the surface of the eyeball, where they coat the eye, before draining away into the lacrimal duct. Tears are vital for day-to-day lubrication of the eye and to wash away potentially harmful substances or allergens.

When natural tear production is disrupted it can cause excessive tearing or watering eyes (Epiphora).

Tears are usually lost from the eye via its drainage channel (lacrimal canaliculi) into the lacrimal duct, or by evaporation from the surface of the eye. Epiphora occurs when more tears are produced than are lost either by overproduction of tears or a lack of effective drainage.

Watery eyes can be a temporary problem for many people, when they are emotional, suffering from allergies, or facing the elements outdoors. For others, this can be a chronic problem caused by certain diseases and disorders, abnormal positioning of the eyelids, or blockage in the lacrimal duct.

If watering becomes excessive, particularly if the eye is red, uncomfortable, or producing discharge then it would be advisable to make an appointment with our optometrist.

Foreign body removal

Foreign bodies and abrasions are the most common conjunctival and corneal injuries. Foreign body removal techniques vary depending on the type of foreign body:

Surface foreign bodies are removed with irrigation and a moistened cotton-tipped applicator.

Embedded foreign bodies need to be removed on the point of a sterile spud (an instrument designed to remove ocular foreign bodies) or a 25- or 27-gauge needle, generally under guidance with a slit lamp.

Intraocular foreign bodies, or any penetrating injuries, are treated surgically by an ophthalmologist.

If at any time you suspect the presence of an intraocular foreign body or other penetrating injury, stop the procedure and avoid putting any further pressure on the globe. Protect the globe with a rigid shield (seated on or beyond the bony orbital rim), give systemic antibiotics (eg, empiric cefazolin and gentamicin) and an antiemetic, and immediately obtain ophthalmologic consultation for evaluation and treatment.
